The Contact Office for Geographical Practice at the Institute of Geography of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin serves as an interface between university research and teaching in geography on the one hand and geographical practice on the other. Its services include a continuously updated database of possible internship positions and a regular office hour for questions about internships and finding a suitable placement. In addition, the Contact Office organizes the lecture series “Career Perspectives for Geographers” and the Geography Practice Workshop (Module 10 / Geographical Professional Practice, StPO 2014, and Module B11 / Geographical Professional Practice, StPO 2018).
Office Hours for Submissions and Advising #
- Inquiries can be sent at any time by email to kontaktstelle.geographie@geo.hu-berlin.de.
- In the winter semester 2026/27, the office hours of the Contact Office for Geographical Practice will take place during the lecture period on Thursdays from 4:00 to 4:45 p.m. in Room 4.108 (RUD16). Individual appointments can be arranged during the semester break.
- Individual advising sessions can still be requested by email.
- Unfortunately, the Contact Office’s phone line at the Institute of Geography cannot be staffed at present. Please get in touch by email first to arrange an individual phone appointment.

Module “Geographical Professional Practice” in the Winter Semester 2026/27 #
To take part in Module 10/B11 in the winter semester 2026/27, you must register in AGNES. The digital platform for the course itself is a Moodle course; we will send you the access details after your AGNES registration. AGNES registration is therefore also required if you do not yet want to complete the module examination (MAP) but would like to attend the lecture series “Career Perspectives for Geographers” and/or the “Practice Workshop” (poster session) without presenting a poster of your own. Please note that we can only reach you if you have registered via AGNES; without registration within the deadline, participation in the module is unfortunately not possible.
Attending the information session for Module 10/B11 “Geographical Professional Practice” once is mandatory. It will take place on 15 October 2026 at 5:15 p.m. in the small lecture hall (0.110) of the Erwin Schrödinger Centre (ESZ, RUD26). There will also be an opportunity to ask questions about all parts of the module. If you have already attended the information session in a previous semester and do not wish to attend again, please let the Contact Office know by email by 12 October.
(Lecture) “Career Perspectives for Geographers” #
In these events on the job market for geographers, organized in cooperation with the German Association for Applied Geography (DVAG) and the university team of the Federal Employment Agency Berlin-Mitte, (mostly) trained geographers report on their wide range of professional experience and answer students’ questions. A list of past events can be found below.
In the winter semester, the lecture series “Career Perspectives for Geographers” takes place online on Thursdays from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Exact dates and topics will be published here.

(Colloquium) “Geography Practice Workshop” #
Within the Geography Practice Workshop, the poster presentation of your internship is the final assessment of Module 10 (StPO 2014) or Module B11 (StPO 2018) “Geographical Professional Practice”.
Active participation in the poster session with your own presentation (MAP) in the winter semester is expected to be possible on the following dates at 5:15 p.m., in person in the foyer of the Institute of Geography (RUD16) (updates may follow):
- Poster session I – 12 Nov 2026
- Poster session II – 10 Dec 2026
- Poster session III – 14 Jan 2027
- Poster session IV – 11 Feb 2027
Registration for the poster sessions takes place via Moodle after the information session (see above).
Passive participation as a member of the audience in a total of three poster presentations counts as participation in the Practice Workshop. No further registration is required for this.
Completion Sheet #
In the winter semester 2026/27, completed module components will continue to be confirmed via the completion sheet (Laufzettel). Information on crediting is provided in the information session (see above), in the Moodle course, or by email from the Contact Office.
Bachelor’s students must list their completed components for the professional practice modules on the corresponding completion sheets and have them confirmed. Once all components have been completed, hand in the completion sheet together with your internship certificate and the completed internship profile to the course coordinators. You can do this during office hours (see above) or after the poster sessions.

If your internship provider needs confirmation that the internship is compulsory, you will receive this certificate by email from the Examination Office.
