Internship Database #

On this page you will find information about the internship database maintained by the Contact Office for Geographical Practice. The aim of the database is to give geography students information about potential internship providers. Completing an internship is not only required by the study regulations; it also gives you the opportunity to gain (first) practical work experience, acquire qualifications beyond your degree and make contacts with companies.

The database: a collection of potential internship providers #

The database now contains around 700 potential internship providers, including private companies (e.g., planning and engineering consultancies), research institutions, associations, NGOs and public authorities. A key aim of this collection is to save you work when looking for a suitable internship: you no longer have to research the most important information on a wide range of companies and institutions yourself – we have already collected it for you.

With this collection of information, the database is intended as a source of ideas and to give you an overview of the broad range of fields in which geographers work. We certainly do not want to (and cannot!) keep you from searching on your own, though – your own initiative cannot be replaced by our small (and by no means complete) collection.

The entries in the database are not current job advertisements, nor do they guarantee that an internship is available or will take place. They are former internship positions of geography students as well as institutions from the event series “Career Perspectives for Geographers”.

How do I get access to the database? #

If you are a student at the Institute of Geography at HU, you can request information from the database. To help us find potential internship providers, please answer the following questions in your request to the Contact Office:

  1. Where would you like to do your internship? (e.g., in Berlin/Brandenburg, elsewhere in Germany, abroad)

  2. Which fields of geographical work are you interested in? Please choose from the following keywords (maximum of five):

  • Waste management and contaminated site remediation
  • Energy
  • Development cooperation
  • Geology
  • Geoinformatics and cartography
  • Real estate
  • Agriculture
  • Market research
  • Nature conservation
  • Education
  • Physical geography research
  • Politics and public administration
  • Journalism and publishing
  • Project management and consulting
  • Spatial planning
  • Regional development
  • Software development
  • Social science research
  • Urban planning/development
  • Tourism
  • Environmental analysis and environmental planning
  • Transport and logistics
  • Economic development

Note on internships abroad #

Our database is currently being updated. Among other things, this concerns internships abroad – more entries are to be added here. Until then, if you are interested in an internship abroad, we will send you a list of all entries without thematic sorting, as unfortunately we cannot cover all topics here until the update is complete.

Send your requests to the Contact Office for Geographical Practice #

Please send your requests to the following address: kontaktstelle.geographie@geo.hu-berlin.de or come to the office hours of the Contact Office for Geographical Practice. We will try to send you the requested information within one week.

In addition, we post current internship vacancies on the notice board on the ground floor of the new building.

Do you have suggestions, ideas for improvement or even new addresses that you think we should add? That’s worth an email, isn’t it?!
