Colloquia at the Institute – An Introduction #

A colloquium is an academic format in which researchers, students, and experts present and discuss their current research concepts and findings. It serves as a platform for knowledge exchange and critical engagement with current questions within a specific academic field.

At the institute, there are generally two types of colloquia:

  1. The Geographical Colloquium
The Geographical Colloquium provides a platform for public academic lectures. External guests, visiting scholars, and members of the Institute of Geography present their current research projects, thereby fostering interdisciplinary exchange.

  2. The Thesis Colloquia of the Institute’s research groups
Each research group at the institute organizes its own colloquium, sometimes in cooperation with other groups. In these thesis colloquia, students present the concepts and results of their final theses. Contributions from academic staff and external guests may also be part of the program.

These events help to maintain a vibrant academic discourse within the institute and offer valuable insights into current research topics and methods. Moreover, the colloquia are part of the curriculum of our degree programs and are therefore partially mandatory for students.
